Chapter Thirteen:

“What can I do for you?” she asked, still seated on Twayblade’s back.

Darsus noticed the marks that assured him that she was indeed the holder of the stave. The grey ribbons that ran up around her wrists peeked out from beneath the cloak she wore. The silver streaks in her hair were ever prominent against the blackness of its color. He saw the Stave of Bothrane slung over her back and the ring of Anlavar upon her finger. How he had longed for the day when he would meet the one who was to lead them into the Mountains of Hallvard; he could never have imagined how alluring she was. He had been told the stories from boyhood and now, here she was before him and he was taken by her grace and beauty.

For time out of mind, she had haunted his dreams. More than once, he had heard her voice on the winds of the plains. Darsus was now a man, but his boyhood fantasies had not left him. The reality of it was right here…right now.

“I have been entrusted with something that has been in my family for many generations,” he said as he walked around to the opposite side of his horse and retrieved a circular shield. “This is Skyda. It is the shield of Prince Balor of Bothrane. It is said to have been blessed by Ehveh himself. It has been our duty to guard it until the Light Bearer arrives.”

She dismounted and walked over to where he stood. She had noticed that Darsus looked inquisitive and sincere; what he had looked like as a boy flashed in her thoughts. He presented the shield to her. It was perfectly round, fashioned from steel; in the center was a copper disc which opened to reveal a compartment. She could tell by Darsus’ expression that he had not known of it till now. Inside the opening, lay a huge silver coin. She picked up the coin and hooked the shield onto Twayblade’s new gear which the villager’s insisted he wear for the trip into the mountains.

As she turned the coin over in her hands, she saw a scene engraved upon it that set the hair down her back on end. The picture portrayed an immense group of people moving into the mountains; in fact, it was nearly the exact scene that she saw before her at this very moment. On the other side of the coin, she saw a wall that had been carved out of the mountainside and there were, what appeared to be, people walking through it.

“Look,” she handed the coin to Darsus. “What does it mean?”

“I suppose it could be a sort of map to let us know where it is we are going. Perhaps this wall is our destination.” He was in awe of the shield having yielded this coin to her and his interest in this destiny was growing. The stories he had been told as a child were coming to pass right before his eyes and it thrilled him.
